Iranian Fishing Boat Operations in Pakistani Waters

Iranian fishing boats have been operating in the coastal waters of Pakistan for many years, particularly near the maritime border regions of Balochistan province. These traditional wooden dhows and modern fishing vessels frequently cross into Pakistani territorial waters in search of better fishing grounds, leading to occasional tensions between the two neighboring countries.

The fishing communities along Pakistan\“s Makran coast have mixed relationships with their Iranian counterparts. While there is cultural and linguistic affinity between the Baloch populations on both sides of the border, competition over marine resources sometimes creates friction. Local Pakistani fishermen often complain that Iranian boats use more advanced equipment and deplete fish stocks that traditionally belonged to coastal communities in Gwadar, Pasni, and Ormara.

Pakistan\“s Maritime Security Agency regularly conducts patrols and has detained numerous Iranian fishing boats for illegal entry into Pakistani waters. However, the proximity of fishing grounds and traditional fishing patterns make complete regulation challenging. Both countries have engaged in diplomatic discussions to establish clearer fishing boundaries and cooperation mechanisms.

The Iranian fishing boats typically target species like tuna, mackerel, and shrimp, which are abundant in the nutrient-rich waters of the Arabian Sea. Many of these vessels operate as small family enterprises, continuing generations-old fishing traditions while adapting to modern fishing technologies and market demands.
