Traditional Fishing Equipment in Pakistan
Pakistan has a rich tradition of fishing along its coastal areas and inland water bodies. Traditional fishing equipment used by local fishermen includes hand nets, cast nets, and small wooden boats called \“hora\“. These methods have been passed down through generations and reflect the cultural heritage of coastal communities. In Sindh and Balochistan provinces, fishermen use unique fishing traps made from local materials. The \“katra\“ is a traditional fishing net made from cotton or nylon threads, while \“bollo\“ is a type of fish trap constructed from bamboo and wood. These traditional methods demonstrate the sustainable fishing practices that have been part of Pakistani culture for centuries.
Modern fishing equipment has also been introduced in recent years, including motorized boats and synthetic nets. However, many coastal communities still prefer traditional methods as they are more environmentally friendly and preserve cultural identity. The equipment varies depending on the region and type of fish being caught, with different tools used for shrimp, pomfret, and other local species.
