The USCIS H1B lottery is a random selection process used when the number of H1B visa petitions exceeds the annual cap. This system ensures fair distribution of available visas among qualified applicants.
Each year, USCIS receives hundreds of thousands of H1B petitions for only 85,000 available spots. The lottery system randomly selects which petitions will be processed, giving all eligible applicants an equal chance regardless of when they filed.
The process involves two lotteries: one for the regular cap of 65,000 visas and another for the advanced degree exemption of 20,000 visas. Applicants with US master\“s degrees or higher get two chances in the lottery system. |
