Affinity estimation and planning poker are two popular techniques used in agile project management for estimating the effort required to complete user stories or tasks. While both methods aim to provide accurate estimates, they differ in their approach and application.
Affinity estimation involves grouping similar-sized items together based on relative sizing. Team members silently place items on a scale (such as T-shirt sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL) and then discuss any discrepancies. This method is efficient for large backlogs and promotes quick consensus.
Planning poker, on the other hand, uses a card-based system where each team member selects a card representing their estimate for a story. The estimates are revealed simultaneously, and discussions follow if there are significant differences. This technique encourages diverse perspectives and reduces anchoring bias.
Both methods have their strengths: affinity estimation is faster for initial backlog grooming, while planning poker fosters deeper discussions on complex stories. Choosing the right method depends on the team\“s context, the size of the backlog, and the need for collaboration. |
